Sago Palm Warning

posted Jul 10, 2010 2:22 PM by Marlenia Richardson   [ updated Jul 10, 2010 7:14 PM ]

I am still working on website update slowly and surely it will happen.

I recently posted an article on common poisons for dogs around the house. I learned yesterday at the vet that I missed a major and dangerous plant. The Sago Palm is a very popular landscape plant/house plant in the Austin and surrounding Central Texas area. I had no idea how deadly one is to a dog. The vet I was talking to said because of the hard freeze this year many were damaged and people were cutting the dead growth off. Of course the family dog is hanging out in the yard with them as they work. The dog finds the scent of Sago very interesting (yes, Sago smells and tastes good to dogs). The dog begins to chew the trimmings.  Disaster follows and it is sometimes fatal to dogs. The vet felt the plant should come with a warning on the label for pets because of how toxic Sago is. So if you have Sago Palm, be very careful of leaving your dog unsupervised around it.  Also, it is poisonous to children.
